Jean-Claude Passeron

Biography

Normalien, it is directed, after having passed the aggregation of philosophy, towards the Sociologie. He collaborates with Pierre Bourdieu during the years 1960. From this collaboration the Heirs in 1964 and will be born the Reproduction in 1970. These two works will have a durable influence on the sociology of French education. With Jean-Claude Chamboredon, they also publish the Trade of sociologist - work of methodology and epistemology of sociology.

In 1968, it belongs to the core co-opting charged to found the Experimental University center of Vincennes, teaching project of avant-garde, become today the Université Paris 8 (known under the name of " University of Vincennes with Saint-Denis"), with, inter alia, Robert Castel, Michel Foucault and Alain Badiou. Later, it gives up it to integrate the EHESS.

Put besides its famous collaboration with Bourdieu, it completes also work with other sociologists like Jean-Claude Chamboredon, Robert Castel, Claude Grignon, Michel Grumbach and François de Singly.

Taking its distances with Bourdieu, Passeron continues its investigations in sociology of the culture and arts. It publishes, in this field, L `Œil in the page, the Artists: test of social morphology , the Time given to tables .

In 1991, it makes appear the Sociological Reasoning , work partly resulting from a thesis of State. This book had a major impact on the epistemological reflection in social sciences. Breaking with the theses of the Métier of sociologist which did not see a difference between social sciences and sciences of nature, Passeron finds the epistemological dualism of max Weber. He affirms thus that social sciences are historical sciences and do not have, so not the same mode of truth as sciences of nature. In particular, they are not refutable sciences within the meaning of Karl Popper. That does not mean in so far as they are not scientists, but that the proposals in social sciences never have the same probatory force as in sciences of nature.

Jean-Claude Passeron is director of studies to the École of the high studies in social sciences, where it belongs to a mixed unit (with CNRS) with character tridisciplinaire: Shadyc (Sociology, History, Anthropology of dynamic cultural). He directs the review Enquête .
