Jean-Claude Milner

Jean-Claude Milner is a linguist, philosopher, writer and thinker French. Born in 1941 in Paris, where it resides, from a father Jewish immigrant from Lithuania and from an Alsatian mother from Protestant tradition. He is unmarried, without child. His/her sister is Judith Milner.

It continued its studies in Paris (raises in khâgne with the Lycée Henri-Iv), then entered to the National university of the Street of Ulm in 1960, where it follows in particular the teaching of Louis Althusser. He is then secretary of the Circle of Epistemology of the ENS. Affilié to the movement Maoist of the Proletarian Gauche of 1968 to 1971, he there côtoie Jacques-Alain Miller, in company of which he will become acquainted with Jacques Lacan. Another trade-guild determining: that of Benny Levy, undoubtedly one of the figures of what Jean-Claude Milner will call later the " Jew of savoir". To finally note the lesson of Roland Barthes and Romance Jakobson. With each one of these determining meetings can be associated one or more pounds with this scholar author, at the same time demanding and prolific, with the taste for the paradox and the provocation. Its declaration thundering on the work of Pierre Bourdieu the heirs (" a work antisémite" , France-Culture, 13.01.2007) occulted of the public cultivated an effort of reflection and " agitation" continued long time with rigor and without concessions: one owes him in particular a argued denunciation of the position of " naïf" catch by Noam Chomsky with respect to the revisionism (cf Orders and reasons of language ).

Jean-Claude Milner carried out part of his studies in the United States, being formed with the Massachusetts Institute off Technology with linguistics chomskienne; one owes him the French translation into 1971 of the " Aspects of the theory syntaxique" of Noam Chomsky, translation which establishes the terminology of the French school of generative grammar and strongly contributed to the reception of this theory in France. Its academic career proceeded with the Université Paris VII where he taught linguistics in the department of linguistics created under the impulse of Antoine Culioli, its reader of doctorate. From the frequentation of Antoine Culioli, Jean-Claude Milner withdraws an interest for the question of the determination and the articulation of the direction and syntax. Its work " Introduction to a science of the langage" (1989) bases a resting project of general linguistics on a radical separation between the direction and syntax (theory of the syntactic positions) and an epistemology combining the contributions of Karl Popper and Imre Lakatos. Jean-Claude Milner followed the later developments of the theory chomskienne, without however abounding on the assumption of a biological justification defended by Chomsky.

Professor with the University Paris VII, Jean-Claude Milner also took part in work of the École freudienne of Paris; he was President of the International Collège of Philosophy.
