FLOC' H

Jean-Claude Floc' H says FLOC' H is illustrator, draftsman of cartoon and author, born in France the September 25th 1953.

Floc' H is a major artist of the illustration and the cartoon. It is one of principal holding of the style of drawing purified qualified of clear Ligne.

After a fast passage to the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of decorative arts of Paris, Floc' H is devoted to the illustration for the press and the edition (covers for the Marginalia collection at Glénat…), then a first album of cartoon with François Rivière published in 1977 " carries out; Return It of Sevenoaks " who will be prépublié in the pages of Pilot (of N°35 in N°40). With this album the duet Floc' H-River revolutionizes the narration of the cartoon, by imposing a style of account which will be compared with that of the New Novel and an elegant graphics which joins again with the tradition of the Belgian school while breaking the usual linearity of the kind. The prepublication of the Appointment of Sevenoaks in the Pilote magazine was preceded by an introduction written by Rivière which defined the philosophy of work perfectly that the duet started to build:

the history which one will read will not fail to wake up at more than one amateur the nostalgic cloud of the memories of the last one - I want to say that, so near still to a school which filled our childhood and of which we will never forget the benefits. Stories of Jacobs, all more beautiful ones than the others, mysterious episodes of the adventures of Tintin, in short, all this so rich and so subtle matter which did not cease haunting us, Floc' H and me. And if we work with, unceasingly, the desire to pay homage to these creators who remain Masters, our matter is not less to widen the vision which those offered to us Ci, to all in all take a certain retreat compared to the dictated lesson, initially not to go to them on the feet - what would be a little awkward - but also because we have also to say ourselves…

One will see it, the completed reading, the fallen down curtain, our project wants to make lose with the childish vision a little its innocence, he would also like to tie between the cartoon and other kinds of the malicious reports/ratios by the means of the references. All in all, which we assert, it is the right to make leave this kind which we like such an amount of his routine, some of its practices a little mièvres… And parks with the significant hearts!

But trève of superfluous words… Somebody in the shade struck the three blows…

F. River

It is in the Eighties that Floc' H explodes when the style Ligne Claire becomes a reference in the cartoon (with Yves Chaland, Ted Benoit, Serge Clerc, Joost Swarte…) and, which ensures a great visibility, publicity. In this last field, certain work will become worships such as " the Secrecy of Pulmoll Green " , an advertizing album left in 1980. The multiplicity of its advertizing work in particular was for him a means of exploring certain techniques of drawing and of perfecting the control of it. It was in particular the occasion to make its weapons with the brush before using about it for the Blitz album in 1982. The prepublication of Blitz will be done in the pages of the daily newspaper the Morning at a rate of a board color per week from January 4th to November 4th.

The graphic references that Floc' H in the first years practices quickly leave the place to a very personal style mélant anglophilia, elegance and taste of the mystery, the whole as a practitioner a minimalism going to essence. The technique of closed the up is often used to stress important components of the account. Floc' H is expressed more readily in the situations intimists, and prefers the setting in abyme in door - closed with the adventure. Its drawing registers among vraisemblants, in opposition to invraisemblants (Hergé for example which, after an explosion with the castle of Moulinsart, draws the Haddock Captain in a gloss), preferring to represent reality with graphic imagination.

Floc' H also collaborates with Fromental for an album of cartoon very inspired of the universe of Francis Scott Fitzgerald, " Never two without trois" , account of a couple with three where a new method of color application is explored using for the first time at Floc' H of the sets of shades which change usual applats. Tall meadow oat will write also the forewords of " Life" and " High Life" as well as the texts of " My Vie".

Illustrator much more than draftsman of band-drawn, it has, in addition to the publicity, put his talent at the service of the cinema by carrying out posters at the beginning of his career (see lower list). He starts in 1977 with Mint and lemonade of Diane Kurys (for which he will illustrate two others posters) then several times for films of Alain Resnais (for which he signs also illustrations encrusted within films and with the credits) and of Woody Allen. He carries out many illustrations for the press in France, daily newspapers and magazines (To read, Senso, Sir, the Express train, Nouvel Observateur, Libération, Le Monde, Le Figaro, It, 20 years, the Event of Thursday…), in Europe (Per Him, Assessment, World off Interiors, GQ…) and in the United States where the prestigious magazine The New Yorker calls upon its services for several covers and especially of many illustrations of articles since 1997.

After having built a remarkable work as a cartoon, the duet Floc' H-River makes in 2006 an incursion into the literature with its first novel, " chronicles of Oliver Alban, Diary off year Ironist". The two authors explore there the literature and arts of the years 1940 to 1970 with elegance and irony, in the form of thirty-nine portraits. These portraits are supposed to be chronicles written by Oliver Alban. Oliver Alban is in fact a pseudonym of chronicler imagined by Olivia Sturgess and Francis Albany which are the " true auteurs" of these articles. Floc' H and Rivière practice there thus again the setting in abyme, the book in the book. The texts are written by the two authors and Floc' H drew the portraits of the chronic characters there.

At the time of its reopening in 2006, the Museum of Decorative Arts of Paris orders from Floc' H of the portraits of the principal givers of this private establishment. 21 of them is visible in large size in the enclosure of the museum. They are superb illustrations of the talent of portraitist of Floc' H which it regularly uses for the cinema and the press.

Known mainly for its works of cartoons and illustrations, Floc' H also made eleven exposures of initially figurative art then primarily abstract of 1990 to 2003, of which in particular several with the Pixi gallery in Paris and in New York in Nicholas Davies Gallery in 1999.

In 2007, Floc' H leaves a very personal book of illustrations " A life of rêve" , under titrated " Fragments of an autobiography idéale". It is offered the pleasure to it of meeting its heroes, alive or dead, real or imaginary and of taking seat at their sides the one moment space. It is represented there, through the centuries of 360 before Jesus Christ at 2046, in situations where it would have dreamed to be: as a pupil of Plato, a Arsene Lupin, posing in the air for Halsman, with the marriage of Sacha Guitry, then to finish its days in full wisdom on May 4th, 2046. A work reference frame paying homage to the people who counted for Floc' H in her development of artist and man.

Floc' H also contributes from now on to the magazine " Monsieur" within the leading committee.

The older brother of Floc' H, Jean-Louis Le Floch (without apostrophe), worked a long time as a draftsman of cartoon (Jacopo, a City is not a tree, in full cold war…) and illustrator.
