Jean-Charles de Folard

Knight Jean-Charles de Folard , called the Végèce French , tactician, born with Avignon the February 13rd 1669, died in this city in 1752.

It showed early a taste decided for the military career. The reading of the Commentaires of Jules César learned how to him to regard the war not a simple trade, but as an erudite and major art. Also, all the actions where it was were for him a source of instruction and remarks erudite, which it consigned since in its works.

It took part in all the wars of the end of the reign of Louis XIV, gave the generals under whom it served sometimes as the plans of defense of places, sometimes of the plans of countryside; was distinguished in quality from captain to the Bataille from Malplaquet (1709); went successively, after the Paix of Utrecht (1713), offered its services to the Chevaliers of Malta against the Turks, then the king Charles XII of Sweden, and could make adopt its ideas by this last prince.

On its return in France, it was named Mestre of camp and commander of place. It took part at the end of its life in extravagances of the Convulsionnaire S.

Its principal works are:

  • New découtertes on the war , Paris, 1724;
  • Defense of the places ;
  • Comments on the History of Polybe (translated into French by dom Vincent Thuillier), work estimated, whose best edition is that of Amsterdam, 1735, 7 volumes in-4. The author placed at the head a Traité column and of a major nature , where it exposes a system of tactic which gave place to sharp discussions, but whose some ideas were put in practice successfully.
