Jean-Baptiste Santerre

Jean-Baptiste Santerre is a French painter born with Magny-in-Vexin in 1651 and died with Paris the November 21st 1717.

Biography

After having begun its career as portraitist (it made in particular a portrait of Marie Leczinska in front of the House of St Cyr, preserved at the museum of Versailles), it acquired a great reputation thanks to his academies. Its toilela more famous is undoubtedly Suzanne with the bath , preserved at the Musée of Louvre, with Paris. Presented in 1704 for the contest of the Academy, it constitutes a good illustration of the refinement of the artist. This table of Louvres, revolutionary seizure, does not seem to be either a double or a copy of the original If its religious paintings missed inspiration, its Suzanne was not deprived of erotism, which makes of Santerre the precursor of François Boucher (1730-1770) and of Jean-Honore Fragonard (1732-1806).
