Jean-Baptiste Regnault

Jean-Baptiste Regnault (October 9th, 1754 with Paris - November 12th, 1829 in Paris) is a neo-classic painter academic and French.

Biography

It is first of all foam during five years, then, of return to Paris, he becomes the pupil of Jean Bardin, which he accompanies in Italy, as well as Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié and Joseph-Marie Vien. Its Alexandre and Diogène are worth the to him Prix of Rome in 1776. It remains with the Villa Médicis in company of Jacques-Louis David and Pierre Peyron, then it is elected member of the Académie of the Art schools in 1782.

It multiplies the ancient subjects, then is impassioned for the Révolution and painted for the Salon of 1795 Freedom or Death: in the center, the Genius of the France to the tricolor wings flies over the terrestrial sphere expressing the universality of the ideas of 1793; on its left, Death; on its line, the Republic with the symbols of freedom, the equality and fraternity.

Jean-Baptiste Regnault is buried with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise.
