Jean-Baptiste Messenger , (1812 - March 12th 1885) (Laval), painter and draftsman French.
Biography
Origin
He was born in Laval in 1812. Its taste for the drawing appeared when he was schoolboy. Its first professor was Mr. Domaine who taught the drawing with the college of Laval. Some churches, that of Montflours inter alia, had a long time compositions of the young Laval-native painter. Misters of Broise and Morin of Blotais decided his/her father to send it to Paris.
Paris
He worked four years in the workshop of the painter Picot then in those of the Aquarelliste Isabey and of the Paysagiste Hubert.
Picturesque Mayenne
Of return to Laval, it was put at work, traversed the department of Mayenne, crayonnant the principal sites and monuments. The June 8th 1844, the Echo announced the project of an album entitled: “ picturesque Mayenne ”; announced the July 13rd that the boards of the first delivery (Laval) were drawn and that the text was under press; and finally the July 27th the leaflet of the work gave. The second delivery (Department) is announced the December 6th 1845 and is finished the March 25th 1846. The opinion was signed of Leon Messager, whose name reappears only in the 6th board (Ambroise Paré). All the other drawings are of Jean-Baptiste Messager. The castle of Saint-Ouen (Chemazé), the gate of the Saint-Vénérand church of Laval, are engraved on stone, process invented by the two brothers. The first 14 boards and 16th are lithographed by Edouard Morice, 15th (Château of Mortiercrolles), and the 21e (mills of Mayenne), by Auguste Bry, of Paris, 17th (Saint Nicolas's Day de Craon), by Lemercier of Paris, the 13 last by Godbert of Laval. The text, due to several collaborators, was printed at Feillé-Grandpré.
Works
II was then in charge of the courses of drawing to the Sacré-coeur , with High-Follis , at the Blu institution, temporary of Mr. Ferret to the college. It gave also very many particular lessons. All these activities did not prevent it from fixing on fabric or paper the old streets, the curious houses which were going well quickly to disappear during the great and road works drain: its works are an interesting testimony. Many of these sketches, crayonnés hastily, but with an exactitude and a thorough knowledge of the drawing since were reproduced in tables with oil. Several of its drawings are engraved by Worms, in the picturesque Guide of the traveller in FranceII obtained money medals in Laval, Angers, Rennes, Alençon, Mans; it accepted the large diploma of honor to the first exposure of the Arts Joined together of Laval, exposed to the Salon of Paris in 1868. He died in Laval the March 12th 1885. His/her brother, Leon Messenger ocupa especially of restoration of tables and introduced the first in Laval photography.
