Jean-Baptiste Massillon

Jean-Baptiste Massillon , born the June 24th 1663 with Hyères and dead the September 28th 1742 with Beauregard-l' Bishop, is a French man of the church, bishop of Clermont.
Large preacher, in 1700, it preached the Avent with Versailles in front of Louis XIV. He pronounced several funeral orations, inter alia that of Louis XIV who starts with these words: “God alone is tall, my brothers”. In 1718, it preached the Sermon S of the Petit Lent in front of Louis XV child.
He was elected member of the French Academy in 1719. With the XVIIIe century, it was often compared with Bourdaloue and Bossuet. Its sermons knew many editions and its complete Œuvres was several times published during the XIXe century.
Voltaire, which was made read the Small Lent during its meals, said of him: “The preacher who best knew the world; more flowered than Bourdaloue, more pleasant, and whose eloquence feels the court gentleman, the academician, and the man of spirit; moreover, moderate and tolerant philosopher. ” ( Catalog of the majority of the French writers which appeared in the Century of Louis XIV, to be used with the literary history of this time in the century as Louis XIV , 1751)
