Jean-Baptiste Martenot is a French architect, born in Burgundy, town of Rennes. The Martenot Markets and the Martenot Prefecture were named in its honor. He is a former student of the school of the Art schools.

Born with the Saint-Seine-the Abbey (Coast-D' Gold), on July 26th, 1828 - Died on March 30th, 1906 in Rennes.

Of modest origin, it obtains a departmental pension to make its study at the National school of the Art schools of Paris, which it integrates in 1850, Blouet workshop. It obtains the price Muller Sœhnée.

At 26 years, Martenot is named inspector of the Palate of Louvre.

In 1858, the mayor of Rennes Leon of Ormeaux requests it for the post of architect of the Town of Rennes, posts that it will occupy until 1895.

Its works

  • Its work in Rennes is important. It builds many communal buildings, school complexes, markets, belfry of the town hall, the Palate of Trade, the Savings bank, the greenhouses of the Botanical garden, as well as the Medical school and the Faculty of Science, and the church Saint-Aubin-in-Our-Lady-of-Good-News, place Holy-Anne (1884-1904).
  • It is him which draws up the general plan of viability, for the municipal drinking water drain.
  • two houses of the Strings which were built of 1868 to 1871. In the same style as old the Markets of Paris of Victor Baltard. The markets of Rennes are one of rare testimonys of metal architecture in a city built mainly out of wood and stone.
  • the Emile-Zola college-college where it uses a combined style of Granite, Tuffeau and brick.
  • It had also abundant private customers, and is the author of many private mansions (Claudet hotel, Léofanti hotel, hotel of Nétumières, hotel of Leon…) and of castles (castle with Plénée-Jugon (allotted, about 1860), castle of Breil with Lourmais (1862, Castle of Bonnefontaine to Antrain, restoration castle of Craffault (1899-1902) and gallery, house Northern wing (1902) with Plédran, Coasts-D' Armor). It pareillement builds industrial plants, of which Printing works Oberthür (1870).
