Jean-Baptiste Fabre
Jean-Baptiste Castor Fabre (1727 - 1783) is an ecclesiastic and writer.
Its life
It is born with Sommières (Languedoc, current Département of Gard) on March 28th 1727. His/her father is regent (teacher) for the municipality, his mother deals with the school of the girls. Not being the groin, it is tonsure at 12 years before following studies among Jesuits of Montpellier of 1745 to 1751. It goes then to the seminar of Nimes where it is ordered priest in 1752. He is vicar of Aubais, in the Vaunage as from 1753. It is there that it designs “the Opera of Aubais” and its masterpiece: the “Histoîra die Jean the year meadows” (Istoara de Jan the year near, History of Jean-the have-taken). In 1755, Fabre becomes cleaned of Vic-la-Gardiole, close to Montpellier, then in 1756 of Castelnau-le-Lez just beside this city. It is there that it writes the “Jan the year close” and “the treasure of substancion”. Benefitting from the proximity of Montpellier, it passes a thesis of philosophy which enables him to become professor of rhetoric to the royal college of this city starting from 1762. But environment is bad and it obtains in 1765 the cure of Crès. It is there that he writes the second version of “Jan the year close” like “the sermon of Mr Sistre”. In 1769, new cure with Saint-Michel of Montels then Cournonterral starting from 1773. It written “the head office of Caderousse there”. Fact cleaned prior of Celleneuve in 1780, it dies there on March 6th 1783.
Its work
Its French work, mainly new, is devoted to traditional poetry, the tales and the polemic. It appears like a very great writer in his work in occitan, much freer and inventive. Initially conceived to amuse noble the, notable ones and ecclesiastics whom he attends, its works were a great popular success at the XIXe century. It also translates with its way into occitan the large traditional poets like Homère, Virgile, Horace, Martial or Ovide.
