He was member of one of the principal families of traders of this city but, contrary to its medium, he shows himself strongly opposite with the slave system. Jean-Baptiste follows a formation to become trader and goes a few months food to Holland. Its family, near of the medium maconnic, has plantations in Saint-Domingue and ships which make the trade between the islands, the Hanséatiques cities and Bordeaux. Its family is also allied with the family Journu, another big family of traders, whose Bernard Journu-Auber and Auguste Journu d' Artiguevieille, baron de Saint-Magne (1753-1794), are the members more in sight. He points out himself to Bordeaux, as of the first days of the Revolution as a speaker. He becomes member of the Museum of Bordeaux and the maconnic cabin of the Friendship in 1790. Appointed to the national Convention in 1791, it was announced by its eloquence and its courage: he denounced the Massacres of September, was opposed to the organization of the revolutionary tribunal and showed Jean-Paul Marat. One also finds it very active within the Commission Commercial and the colonies (to which soon Bernard Journu-Auber will belong.)
However, at May 31st, it was saved by Marat itself like being opposed, in the commission of the twelve, with the arrest of Hébert and Dumas. It did not continue any less to fight the Montagne with strength. Lastly, on the proposal of Amar, it was translated with the revolutionary tribunal, condemned and carried out with the Of Gironde ones, of which his/her own brother-in-law, Jean-François Ducos (1765-1793.) It was only 27 years old.
His/her son, Henri Fonfrède, born in 1788, died in 1841, had a name like Publiciste: it defended under the Restauration the liberal ideas in the principal newspaper of Bordeaux.
