Jean-Baptiste Bagaza born in 1946 is an officer and a politician Burundi, he was president of the Burundi of 1976 with 1987.

Political career

The mode of the first president of the Republic of Burundi, Lieutenant-General Michel Micombero fell on November 1st 1976. At 30 years, the new Head of the State, Colonel Jean-Baptiste Bagaza initiated an economic policy of great scale, and had the ambition to satisfy the needs for the population and' to found a social justice to reduce the ethnic tensions.

But it is unfortunately under its mode that were born the liberation movements from the Hutu: Palipehutu, UBU, Tabara, Bampere… These organizations created sharp tensions in the country. During this same period especially after 1985, the tensions were made more sharp in particular between the State and the Catholic church in particular.

The 3rd republic was proclaimed by Major Pierre Buyoya which seized the power for the first time. It replaced Jean-Baptiste Bagaza with the report heading the September 3rd 1987.

Colonel Bagaza had seized the power in 1976 with the favor of a military coup d'etat. He had been driven out by another coup d'etat, in 1987, which had carried for the first time to the capacity major Pierre Buyoya.

Pierre Buyoya member of the UPRONA installed a military junta until in 1993.

Exile

President Bagaza exiled himself in Libya and to Burundi only the shortly after the election of the president Melchior Ndadaye to the presidency in June 1993 will go back. He is senator. He created the " thereafter; party for the rectification national" ( PARENA ) he became president. He exiled himself then in Uganda.
