Jean-Baptist-Henri de Valincour

Jean-Baptiste Henri of Trousset, sior of Valincour (or Valincourt) is a French man of letters born in Paris on March 1st 1653 and dead the January 4th 1730.

Biography

By the protection of Bossuet, it was allowed in the house of the count de Toulouse and became secretary of the navy then secretary of the commands of the prince.

He was the friend of the chancellor of Aguesseau, Racine and Boileau. He succeeded Racine with the French Academy in 1699 like like Historiographe of the king Louis XIV. Boileau dedicated its 11th satire to him, “On truth and the false honor”. It completed the edition of the Œuvres of Boileau of 1713. He was also honorary member of the Academy of Science in 1721.

Itself very little wrote: he composed of the tales, the fables, the stanzas, the historical works and the translations, in particular of the Latin poet Horace. Its writings show a man of taste, a critic full with smoothness, in short all the features of what one called at the 17th century a honest man .

One often rented the approval of his character and the calm one of his philosophy. It is told that a fire having destroyed, in 1726, 7 or 8.000 volumes of its rich person library, among whom the manuscript of the Vie of Louis XIV of Root, it answered those which deplored this misfortune: “I would hardly have benefitted from my books if I could not lose them. ”
