Jean-Baptist-Gaspard of Handle of Villoison

Jean-Baptist-Gaspard of Handle of Villoison , born with Corbeil-Essonnes the March 5th 1750 and died in Paris the April 28th 1805, is a hellenist and French, known philologist especially for its reconstitution of the text of the Illiade of Homère.

Biography

Hellenist and Latinist, he learns also the Arab , the Syriaque and the Hebrew . He goes to Constantinople with Choiseul-Gouffier, then remains a few weeks in the monasteries of the Mont Athos. Author of many translations and Greek text-editings, it is elected member of the royal Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities in 1791. In 1804, it is named professor with the Collège de France, where it occupies the modern pulpit of Greek created for him.
