Jean-Andre Mongez

Jean-Andre Mongez , priest and French mineralogist, born the November 21st 1750 with Lyon, deceased in May 1788, with Vanikoro, member of the Forwarding of Lapérouse (1785 - 1788).

Biography

The scientist

He entered in the regular canons of Holy-Genevieve, and devoted himself to the study of sciences. Its knowledge in physics had made it incorporate at several learned societies.

Writer of the Newspaper of physics, it belongs to the Company of natural history to the academies of Rouen, Dijon and Lyon. He had obtained some voices to enter to the Academy of Science, when he left in 1785 with Perugia in quality physicist and with the functions chaplain.

Forwarding Perugia

It had been presented to belong to forwarding by its fellow-member of Holy-Genevieve, the abbot Pingré. Actually, competences of the Mongez father extended to the Ornithologie, the Entomologie, the chemistry of water and rock salt…

Mongez receives before its departure a patent of correspondent of the Royal Jardin of the Plants to deal with all these objects.

During the voyage, with Tenerife, all the scientists do not have of cease which they climbed the peak. It had had a great part with the first volumes of the Cours of agriculture of the abbot Rozier, and, since had written the Journal of physics , started with this abbot. It had previously made there insert several pieces, and, inter alia, one on the Ombres coloured of the morning , and (March 1777) one on the Main causes which make smoke the chimneys , subject suggested a few years before by the Académie of Bordeaux. One almost always confused J. - has. Mongez the young person with his brother Antoine Mongez, member of the Institut of France.
