Jaén

Jaén is a Spanish city, capital of the province of the same name in the North-East of the Andalusia. Its population of: 116540 inhabitants represents approximately a sixth of the total population of the province. The city, capital of the principal producing olive oil area in Spain, is nénamoins turned towards many other economic activities: agricultural industry, services, administration, building, tourism. The city is in addition the seat of a university.

The town of Jaén is drawn up with the foot of the Hill of Holy Catherine ( Cerro de Santa Catalina ), and remains very marked by medieval town planning: small squares and lanes with the irregular layout adapting to the strongly sloping character of the site determine the aspect of the historical center. The city is dominated besides by the silhouette of the medieval fortress built at the top of the hill. Jaén is located in addition in the middle of an area at the fertile grounds, crossed by the river Guadalquivir.

The history of the city is strongly related to that of Andalusia and the Crown of Castille, which succeeds, under the reign of Ferdinand III, to tear off it with the Moslems in 1246, and this, after two unfruitful attempts.
