Jayavarman VIII (Parameçvarapada) is one of the sovereigns of the Khmer Empire. Its reign lasted of 1243, when it reversed its predecessor Indra Varman II, with 1295, year when it abdicated.
Follower of Shiva, it imposes as of his accession on the throne the return to the Hindouisme and makes destroy many statues of Bouddha (in particular to the Banteay Kdei, with the Your Prohm, the Preah Khan and the Bayon, where the principal statue will be replaced by an effigy of the god Harihara. He also makes transform of many Buddhist temples into sanctuaries hindouists and makes erase the inscriptions of his two predecessors, Jayavarman VII and Indra Varman II. He makes increase the Banteay Samre and build the last building hindouist with Angkor Thom, inventoried today like “monument 487”. This temple is dedicated to the Brahmane Jaya Mangalartha like with his/her Subhadra mother, associated with a misadventure of Vishnou. Jayavarman VII itself was bound by marriage with the family of this priest.
During its reign the Mongolian forces of Kubilai Khan invaded the empire by its Eastern borders (1283). Jayavarman VIII then chooses to pay a tribute for purposes to avoid the war. In 1290, the My S recover their independence. In 1295, it is the same of the Thai kingdom of Sukhothai.
His/her son-in-law, Indra Varman III, a Buddhist, succeeds to him in 1295.
