Jasmine (Jacques Boé, known as)

Born on March 6th 1798 with Agen, died on October 4th 1864 in the same city. Hairdresser-wig maker and poet.

Its life

Wire of a tailor, Jasmin is resulting from a family of the small people of Agen. After some studies in a regent and with the seminar of the city, it is put in training in a hairdresser. Its taste of the stories, its talents of storyteller make wonder there and it can soon settle on its account and marry. It becomes famous with its lovesong “the fidelitat agenesa” made up at the time of the carnival of 1822. It continues with “Lo Chalibari” in 1825. The dedication comes when it was crowned by the Academy of Agen for its ode “Lo very of May” at the time of the inauguration of the statue of Henri IV with Nérac in 1830. The academy crowned up to now only French works. It then begins a career of public reader of its poetries in the area then more and more far. In 1836, the recitation with Bordeaux of “the avugla of Cuilhèr Manor house” ensures a national fame to him. Starting from 1840, its rounds in the South occitan occupy it full-time and become events which attract crowd. It would have given in all more than 12000 meetings, distributing the incomes to charitable organizations.

Its work

Large storyteller, it knew to make reappear popular poetry occitane and caused innumerable vocations. Its various works and poetries are gathered in its four “Papilhòtas” (1835, 1842, 1854 and 1863). Most known are “Françoneta”, the history of a marked young girl of sorcery, “Maltra cleared it”, “Mons sovenirs”, “Los due fresh bessons”, “Lo poeta LED populates has Monsur Renan”.
