Jarai
The Jarai , or Người Gia Spoke in Vietnamese, are an ethnicity which lives mainly the top-plates of the center of the Vietnam.
The language will jarai belongs to the group Malayo-polynésien of the Langues austronésiennes. It is related with the cham center of Vietnam. The number of speakers is approximately 400.000.
Jarai are the most important group among the populations of the top-plates, collectively indicated by the name of " Mountain " or Degar , word rhade meaning " wire of the montagne". The Rhade are another people of the top-plates.
Jarai live mainly in the provinces of Gia Lai and Kon Tum. A small number lives that of Dak Lak, and also the province of Ratanakiri to the Kampuchea.
After the end of the War of Vietnam, many Jarai and other Mountain dwellers who worked as back-up troops of the American army were accommodated in the United States, in particular in North Carolina.
In years 1950 and 1960 developed a movement degar among Jarai and the other Mountain dwellers. Their goal was the creation of a State independent in the top-plates of Vietnam for the indigenous populations. The Vietnamese government is shown violations of human rights with regard to the Mountain dwellers.
Culture
The traditional village will jarai has a population from 50 to 500 inhabitants. The village has a square plan, the dwellings, individual or Community, being laid out autoru of the center. The houses are traditionally in bamboo, but more recently, the houses out of wooden with zinc roof are increasingly many because more durable.Jarai have a tradition Matrilinéaire. This means that chalk-lining passes through the mother and not the father. One finds this tradition in their cousins Rhade and in other populations austronésiennes, in particular at the Minangkabau of Western Sumatra in Indonesia.
The majority of Jarai is animist and believes that demons populate the universe. Sacrifices of pigs, cows and buffaloes are made systematically to alleviate the spirits. As Vietnam recognizes only six official religions, Jarai are regarded as religieusement persecuted.
Into the years 1970, American missionaries introduced Christianity. The number of Jarai Christians to the Vietnam and the Kampuchea exceeds the 100.000.
The traditional musical instruments of Jarai consist of gong S, xylophones, zithers.
