Two American generals will follow one another the head of the SCAP during the occupation (1947 - 1952). The first being Douglas MacArthur (1947 - April 11th 1951), the second Matthew Ridgway. One generally subdivides this period in two phases separated by the beginning from the war of Korea.
The American occupation involved a series of reforms, in particular the adoption of a constitution on the model of the Western democracies which implied in particular the revision of the role of the emperor who lost the supreme statute of commander of the armed forces of which it was titular at the time of the Expansionnisme of Japan Showa.

The yen was appreciated then in an important way. The Nixon government was also put to support the Popular republic of China, whereas Washington and Tokyo hitherto had maintained the relations privileged with Taiwan. This policy change was felt like a shock, because Nixon had made this decision without consulting the Japanese as a preliminary. Nixon increased also the taxation of the imports of textiles coming from Japan and had threatened to reduce exports of soya towards the Archipelago.
The end of the war of Vietnam, made it possible Japan to reinforce its diplomatic relations and commercial with the Southeast Asia.
The first oil crisis caused an economic deceleration, because 73% of the energy used by Japan were in the form of oil. The oil crisis encouraged Japan has to reduce the energy consumption of the companies, to give up very greedy industries in energy and to develop diplomatic relations with the Middle East.
The control of the Îles Ryukyu, to which Okinawa belongs, was returned by the United States with the Japanese in 1972.
