Janus of Cyprus
Janus of Lusignan , born in 1375, died in 1432, king de Chypre (1398 - 1432), wire of Jacques Ier of Cyprus and Helvis of Brunswick-Grubenhagen.
Like his father, it was retained a long time like hostage in Genoa, and its first name, drawn from that of the city, was a mark of servile flattery towards the city. Hardly king, it seeks to free himself from the supervision of the republic and to recover the town of Famagouste, but Genoa, in addition to its squadrons, had the assistance of France because it had been placed under the protection of the latter. Overcome, Janus had to sign the July 7th 1403 a treaty maintaining the credits and the monopoly génois.
In addition, the Cypriot corsairs did not hesitate to carry on their activity over the Moslem grounds and in particular in Syria. In 1425, the sultan Mamelouk sent in reprisals a squadron to plunder Limassol. The following year, it was an army which unloaded and which crushed the Cypriot army with Chirokitia the July 7th 1426. King Janus was captured and taken along to the Cairo. It is there that the decline of Latin appeared at the great day. The Greek peasants revolted, but the insurection was repressed hard.
Janus was released after having recognized the suzerainty of the sultan. The kingdom was at the same time to pour a tribute with the Mamelouks, contributions to Genoa and to let Génois box all the income of the customs of Famagouste. Janus was never concerned this humiliation and died, weakened and patient with Nicosie the June 29th 1432.
