Events

19th century

  • 1838 : the United States, the American government sign a contract with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad conferring the care to him to convey postal freight, it is the first American railway company to sign such a contract with the government.

  • 1839 : the United States, the New Jersey Railroad and Transportation Company opens its way between Trenton and New Brunswick.
  • 1850 . France: Inauguration of the section Chauny - Tergnier of the railroad of Creil to Compiegne (Company of North)
  • 1862: the United States, during the American Civil War, the general Thomas Jonathan Jackson sends his troops towards north with for objective blocking any traffic on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal; the operation fails and the Armée with the confederated states is withdrawn.
  • 1868 : the United States, the construction of the section aiming at connecting Denver to Golden begins on the Colorado and Clear Creek Railroad.

20th century

  • 1900 : the United States, the Pere Inlays Railway is born from the fusion of the Flint and Pere Inlays Railway Company, Detriot, Lansing and Northern Railroad and Chicago and West Michigan Railroad.

  • 1902 : Swiss, the company of the Swiss federal Railroads is founded after fusion and nationalization of several Swiss railway companies.
  • 1923 : the United Kingdom, the London and North Eastern Railway is founded following the fusion of several British railroad companies .
  • 1932 : the United Kingdom, William Stanier replaces Ernest Lemon like Engineer head mechanic with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.
  • 1932 : the United States, Ralph Budd leaves the Great Northern Railway and becomes president of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.
  • 1933 : the United States, the Beautiful Southern of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway is re-equipped with motorized oars electric replacing those with vapor.
  • 1938 : France, Nationalization of the large railroad companies and official birth of the SNCF.
  • 1945 : Ireland, the Irish company Great Southern Railways becomes the Córas Iompair Éireann.
  • 1948 : the United Kingdom, the British railroads are nationalized, after fusion they give rise to the company of the British Rail ways.
  • 1957 : the United States, the Chicago and North Western Railway rents the Chicago, St Paul, Mineapolis & Omaha Railway.
  • 1958 : the United States, the Chicago and North Western Railway acquires of the Litchfield and Madison Railroad.
  • 1986 : the United States, has Soo Line entirely absorbs the Milwaukee Road after having tried to incorporate it like subsidiary railroad.
  • 1992 : France, appearance of new the logo of the RATP registers in a green circle jade and of its slogan the free spirit.
  • 1994 : the United States, the Rail Management Corporation takes the control of the Atlanta and St Andrews Bay Railroad.
  • 1994 : Germany, the Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Deutsche Bundesbahn amalgamate and give rise to the Deutsche Bahn.
  • 1996 : Netherlands, the railroads Dutch, Nederlandse Spoorwegen, is divided into four autonomous subsidiary companies, NS Cargo liner, NS Passagieren, NS Stations and NS Real Estate, charged respectively with the management of the goods traffic, of the movement of travellers, the stations and the real inheritance.
  • 1999 : France, creation of the trade mark Transilien for the suburban trains of the SNCF for the Ile-de-France.

21e century

  • 2003 : Canada, E. Hunter Harrison is promoted general president-director of the Canadian National.
  • 2004 : the United States, the Light subway METRORail opens with Houston.
  • 2005 :
    • Austria, the company of the Austrian railroads ÖBB is restructured and various subsidiary companies are created: ÖBB-Dienstleistungs GMBH, ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG (transport of passengers) and the Rail Cargo liner Austria AG (transport of freight).
    • Belgium: reform SNCB with creation of a manager of the infrastructure Infrabel and of a development company, both being chapeautés by a holding.
    • Spain: creation of a railway authority placed under the supervision of the Minister for transport.

  • 1880 : the United States, Morris Ketchum, associated in the Rogers Engine and Machine Works and director of the Central Illinois Railroad
