- the Congolese president Laurent-Desired Kabila is assassinated with the presidential palace of Kinshasa. His/her son, Joseph Kabila, will succeed the January 26th to him.
- an Ecuadorian tanker Jessica transporting more than nine thousand tons of Fioul fails broad of the archipelago of the Galapagos, populated marine mammals. More than seven hundred tons of Fioul will flow in broad island but will be carried by the winds and currents towards the broad one.
