Janet Baker

Born on August 21st 1933 with Hatfield (Yorkshire of the South) in north from the England, Dame Janet Baker (Abbott) is famous a Mezzo-soprano and Contralto.

Biography

Janet Baker made its beginnings with the " Oxford University Operated Club" as Róza Miss in the Secrecy.

In 1959, it interpreted Eduige in Rodelinda of Georg Friedrich Haendel. It also had roles in Ariodante (1964) and Orlando (1966) of Haendel. With Adelburgh, Baker sang Didon in " Dido & Æneas" of Purcell (after having begun with the role of the second witch then that of the magician), like " Polly" , " Lucretia" and several great roles still. In 1981, it interpreted " Poppeae" , " Mary Stuart" of Donizetti, " Charlotte" (Werther) and the great role of " Jules César" of Haendel. In 1982, it left the opera after having sung " Mary Stuart" with the ENO and " Orphée" of Gluck with Glyndeboune.

Baker published a report, " Full Circle" , in 1982. In 1991 it was elected " Chancellor off the University off York" until in 2004. It was made " Ram the British Empire" off; in 1976 and member of the " Order off the Companions off Honor" in 1994.

Repertory

Baker was especially known for its airs baroques, the Italian opera and the work of Benjamin Britten. It was a remarkable professional singer, strongly admired for her dramatic intensity. It was probably one of best Didon, the heroin of Purcell.
