Jandarma

The Jandarma is resulting from the Karakullukçu , troops in charge with the safety and the maintenance of law and order under the Ottoman Empire.

the Turkish Gendarmerie is created in 1839 on the model of the French gendarmerie in its territorial organization and on the Italian model for its functional dependence. Jandarma is one of the five components of the Turkish Armed forces.

Short history

  • 1839 : creation of the body,
  • 1879: official appearance of the name of JANDARMA,
  • 1930: legalization and total militarization of the body,
  • 1974: organization in a general command called JANDARMA GENEL KOMUTANLIGI. (JGNK) " General command of Jandarma".
  • 1983 : ratification of the law of organization of the Turkish gendarmerie, its missions and its competences (17985 Olympics of the 3/12/83, law n° 2803).

Ministry of fastening

Jandarma is subordinated for the military missions and the staff training to the staff of the armies and for the missions of public safety, with the ministry for the interior. It does not ensure of prévôté. The commander of the Jendarma returns account to the Minister of Interior Department.

Manpower

The personnel of the gendarmerie is divided into Officier S, Sous-officier S, gendarmes specialized, juniors, soldiers of the row called, civil civils servant and workmen. The Turkish gendarmerie counts approximately 275.000 men.

Missions

The traditional missions of Jandarma are practically identical to those of the French national police, in spite of some differences on the level in the procedure rules penal and administrative. She ensures of the missions of judicial police (primarily in the rural areas), of public safety, maintenance of law and order and military police force.

Since 1984, the priority missions of Jandarma are the maintenance and the re-establishment of the order.
