Janakkala is a municipality south of the Finland, in the area of the Kanta-Häme.

History

The sector is inhabited practically uninterrupted since the withdrawal of the glaciers. Oldest ceramics discovered goes back to 5.000 years.

At the time of the Swedish crusades of the 13th century, current Janakkala densément is densément populated by tribes related to the cultural surface of the Häme. The center of gravity is the fortress of Hakoinen, whose vestiges were largely exploited by the archeologists. Swedish colonization sees as for it the time of the manors, built of number between the 15th century and the 18th century. It does not remain about it today less than 17, one of the highest densities of the country.

The municipal authorities are installation in 1866. The commune accommodates then many refugees come from Karelia at the end of the Guerre of Continuation. Today, they have been the driven out commuters of Helsinki by a cost of housing in continuous rise who start to come to settle there, compensating for largely for more than 10 years the dependant departures á the Rural migration.

Economy

The economy also knew an important change, spending the era of the agricultural whole to a multiplication of the small companies profiting from the good situation of the commune, not far from the big cities of the country.

Agriculture remains nevertheless very important. 342 farms exploit 13.151 hectares of grounds. Tervakoski surrounds the factory of Papier of the same name, and the agroalimentary one has a choice place, with the factories of the groups Nestlé (ices) and Valio (dairy products).

Geography

The commune, without real unit, gathers several villages of the south of the Häme, one of the rural areas densément populated country. The 4 principal villages are Turenki (the administrative center, counting more than 7.000 inhabitants), Tervakoski (4 900), Leppäkoski (450) and Tarinmaa (400). It counts of them 18 others, all lower than 200 inhabitants.

The highway n°3 (E12) crosses the commune between Helsinki and Tampere.

The close municipalities are Hämeenlinna in north, Renko in the west, Loppi in south-west, Riihimäki in the south, Hausjärvi in south-east, Lammi in the east and Tuulos in the North-East.
