It begins in 1987 in a formation from the future athletes from GDR at the national school from the sports from the SC Berlin Dynamo with as trainer Peter Becker.

He lived most of his life in the small village of Merdingen. In 2004, it moves in Switzerland, with Kreuzlingen at the edge of the Lac of Constancy, where it always saw.

Career

It gains its first title in 1988 like champion of GDR of the young people over road. In 1993, he becomes World champion Amateur with Oslo in Norway.

But Jan Ullrich appears in 1996 by finishing 2nd Tour de France for its very first participation in the Grande Boucle in the team Deutsche Telekom.

It is classified this year behind Bjarne Riis, its leader within the German team. Confirming its extraordinary potential, it climbing incredibly rise of Arcalis, by leaving even on the spot Richard Virenque and Marco Pantani. Thereafter it takes the yellow jersey to bring back it to Paris, it thus easily gains the Tour de France in 1997 in spite of the opposition of Richard Virenque. The old runner of ex-Germany of the East then seems promised with many victories over the Lathe.

But sometimes not very professional in its winter preparations, thus taking much weight, Jan is initially beaten in 1998 by the Italian runner Marco Pantani following punctures and with a large failure on the Col Galibier. Then the reign of Lance Armstrong in 1999 starts: for this year, all the times where Ullrich took part in the Turn, it have made better only 2nd behind the American champion. Only not beaten by Lance Armstrong, also beaten by its shade, its own fellow-member of luxury and friend, the German runner Andreas Klöden, 2nd at the time of the Tour de France 2004. What makes of it finally the German Poulidor, because it finished 2nd with five recoveries since 1996, once 3rd and 4th. Whereas one saw it at the time more like one potential winner.

But Jan Ullrich too just on the Tour de France, always was always outdistanced on the first stage of mountain, taking along large gear ratios on its bicycle at the time of the stages of mountain and of against the watch. It is a " diesel" : it climbs the mountain in power and supports the changes of rate/rhythm badly.

Jan Ullrich, on the other hand, disputed its best Tour de France in 2003 (in addition to its victory of 1997). L´allemand indeed was near to beating Lance Armstrong on the Lathe for the only time of its career. Whereas the Tour 2002 had refused with him because of physical problems and suspension for doping, it begins the Grande Boucle with court from competition, with the new whole TEAM Bianchi, transferee of the TEAM Coast. Initially outdistanced without surprised in the Alps, Ullrich largely beats Armstrong at the time of the against-the-watch of Cape Découverte, where it takes again more than one minute and half with the American. It will again release its rival in the rise towards Bonascre, the following day. to find itself at 15 seconds of the yellow jersey in the morning of the stage of Luz - Ardiden. In the Tourmalet, Ullrich again slightly releases the American, the Tour de France then seems to rock. In the final rise, Armstrong however will carry a blow of bludgeon by gaining the stage as a recluse, Ullrich being relegated to more than one minute with the general. At the time of the last stopwatch Nantes has, Ullrich falls under the rain and loses hope of final victory definitively. It will finish second with Paris.

The October 19th 2006, it cancels its Swiss license of professional cycling while ensuring not to put a term at its career. After several unfruitful tests to find a team, he announces the February 26th 2007 to put a term at his career.

Results

Excel wheeler and effective in mountain, it centers the essence of its seasons on the Tour de France (where, in addition to its victory in 1997, it finished with five recoveries in the second place, in 1996,1998,2000,2001 and 2003), which did not prevent it from also gaining a Turn of Spain (1999), two Turn of Switzerland (2004 and 2006), two championships of the world of the against-the-watch (1999 and 2001) and a gold medal on road with the OJ of Sydney (2000) (and Olympic vice-champion of the against-the-watch in 2000). He was thus recognized 2nd of the classification UCI in 1997, and Vélo of Gold in 1997 (2nd: 1999; 3rd: 2000).

Now resident in Bade Wurtemberg, Jan always dreams to gain the Turn again. Fourth in 2004, it will not beat Armstrong in 2005 since the German finishes in the 3rd place (behind Basso) after having gone up general classification during the against-the-watch of Saint-Etienne. He also dreams to gain his national turn, of which he finishes second in 2005.

Winner of against the watch with Pontedera at the time of the 11th stage of the Turn of Italy 2006, it precedes Italian Ivan Basso of 28" , it thus gained at least a victory of stage in each large Turn.

Businesses of doping

Its prize list is tarnished by several business of doping. Indeed, it is implied in the Puerto business into 2006 which will prevent it from disputing the Turn. Positive with the amphetamines
