Jan Garbarek is a Saxophoniste (tenor and soprano) of Norwegian Jazz born the March 4th 1947.

It is a major saxophonist of the years 1970 and 1980, partly by its contribution to the European four-bit byte of Keith Jarrett, but especially by the creation of an esthetics privileging the melody and the sensitivity, as well as the mixture successful with the musics of the world. Garbarek became de facto a figure of a “European” jazz, attentive with silence and slowness.

Beginnings

Jan Garbarek is strongly influenced at its beginnings by John Coltrane and the modal improvisation. In the years 1960, it takes part in recordings with the American type-setter George Russell ( Othello Ballet Continuation and Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature ). It appears as being a disciple of Albert Ayler and Peter Brötzmann, but as from 1973, it is diverted aggressivity of the avant-garde free to explore a music more centered on the melody and silence.

It starts to record at the beginning of the Années 1970 for the German label ECM, based with Munich, but of which celebrates it studio of recording is located at Oslo. Far from the electric furies and virtuosos of the time, its formations (primarily in four-bit byte) produce a light and ventilated sonority, very centered on the melody, silence and breathing. This air side is reinforced by a characteristic sound of saxophone, in particular obtained by a strong effect of reverberation, with the tenor as with the soprano, his instruments of predilection. Sometimes its “éthéré” play will be worth with its music the qualifier (scorning) “ New Age ”.

It is also a pioneer of the Ambient, in particular with the album Dis , in collaboration with Ralph Towner, méditatif album which is a very great business success. The album abundantly will be re-used like music of illustration by television, the cinema and the documentary ones televised.

The Nineties: Jan Garbarek Group

Starting from the end of the year 1980, it forms a regular group with Rainer Brüninghaus, Eberhard Weber, Manu Katché and Marylin Mazur, called the Jan Garbarek Group .

Various collaborations and experiments

Jan Garbarek played with many musicians of the world, in particular, Anouar Brahem, Zakir Hussain, Mari boine, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan.

In 1993, it collaborates with the Ensemble Hilliard, a vocal four-bit byte, to create the album Officium , where the improvisations with the saxophone of Garbarek mèlent with the Gregorian chants singers of Hilliard. The album gains a considerable and unexpected success, with several million sold discs. It is one of best the sale of the label ECM, with the Köln Concert of Keith Jarrett. The experiment is reiterated with the album Mnemosyne in 1999, which widens the parts with traditional songs and contemporary compositions, in particular by the type-setter Veljo Tormis.

It also composes of the film musics Norwegian ( Trollsyn for example) and French, like for television. Jan Garbarek is very often re-used by the sound illustrators of television, in particular for the documentary ones, who appreciate his evocative and éthérée music which is appropriate perfectly for the musical illustration of landscapes.
