Jan Assmann

Jan Assmann , born on July 7th, 1938 with Langelsheim, is a German Egyptologist.

Studies and academic career

Jan Assman continued its studies with Lübeck and Heidelberg before turning, in Munich, Heidelberg, Paris and Göttingen, to the Egyptology, the Classical archeology and the Hellenic studies. It is, since 1976, professor of Egyptology in Heidelberg. It is, also, professor invited to Paris (Collège de France, Practical École of the High Studies, EHESS), to Jerusalem (Hebrew University, Dormition Abbey), and in the United States (Yale, Houston).

Archaeological research

Since 1967, it directs archaeological excavations to Thèbes (over official tombs of the period saïte and time of the Ramsès). He is the author of many works and articles on the religion, the history, the literature and the Egyptian art. He also published comparative studies on the cultural theory ( Das kulturelle Gedächtnis ) and the religion ( Monotheismus und Kosmotheismus ).

Jan Assmann is member of the academy of Heidelberg, of the German Institute of archeology, the historical Institute of anthropology, the Société of exploration of Egypt and the French company of Egyptology. He is also member various committees of experts, among whom those of the Institute of the cultural studies of Essen, of the Research institute of the Protestant university Community, and the Center of cultural studies of Stuttgart.
