James Saumarez

James Saumarez, baron de Saumarez or Sausmarez, (March 11th 1757October 9th 1836) was a known British admiral for his victory with the Bataille of Algeciras.

It was born with Saint-Pierre-Port on the island from Guernesey in an old family from the island. Several of its ancestors were distinguished in the British marine where it began its career at the thirteen years age. For its courage during the attack of Charleston in 1776 on board HMS '' Bristol '', it was named with the rank of lieutenant, then ordering at the conclusion of the battle of Dogger Bank, the August 5th 1781, where it was wounded. To the command of the '' HMS Russell '', it contributed to the victory of the admiral Rodney over the French admiral of Fatty to the Bataille of Holy the it (April 12th, 1782). It was made knight in 1793 for the capture of the Meeting, a French frigate.

With the release of the war with the Russia in 1809, it received the command of the fleet of the Baltic . It kept control during the wars preceding the fall by Napoleon, and showed of it tact with regard to the Swedish government at the time of the crisis resulting from the invasion from the Russia. Charles XIII allotted to him the Grand Cross of the military order of the Sword. It was named admiral and became baron. He died in Guernesey in 1836.
