James Paul Chapin

James Paul Chapin is a American Ornithologue , born the July 9th 1889 with New York and dead the April 5th 1964 in this same city.

It is impassioned very early for the Natural history and, under the influence of its professor discovers the study of the Oiseau X. At ten years, he attends the club of natural history of Staten Island and shows an obvious talent for the illustration.

He starts to work with the American Museum off Natural History where he prepares specimens of birds and Mammifère S and takes part in the development of catalog of certain collections.

In 1908, Herbert Lang (1879-1957) is selected to lead an important forwarding to the Congo. Chapin goes voluntary to assist it. Forwarding, designed to last two years, will finish only six years later, in 1915.

After its return to New York, Chapin takes part in the edition of the report of forwarding and obtains its doctorate in 1919. It will take part in several forwardings in Africa. In 1926, it joint with Ruwenzori-Kiwu forwarding in East Africa and in Congo. It makes appear, in 1932, of Birds off the Belgian Congo , work which is worth the gold medal Daniel Giraud Elliot to him. In 1937, it goes back again to Congo. He becomes the conservative of the ornithological department of American Museum. Finally, it settles in this country with his wife, Ruth Trimble Chapin, in 1953 and studies fauna during 6 years there.

Even if these are the work on Africa which are most known, Chapin with also worked on European fauna , Canadian, Polynesian, etc
