March 22nd 1907. Its ascent remains partly mysterious: his/her mother Katherine Ryan is of possible Irish descent… just like her father James Nally; however, the official documents mention that his/her father are called Thomas Ryan, so doubtless making it possible to the small James to be a legitimate child with the eyes of the company although its first name of baptism was
James Nally Ryan .
His/her official parents very quickly placed it in the orphanage of the Convent of the Pity of Brooklyn where in 1909, it was adopted by Martin and Mary Gavin resulting from a family from mining (Houille) of Mount Carmel in Pennsylvania.
Because of bad social conditions (and that certainly these adoptive parents wanted that it follows their example while becoming minor), Gavin decided to leave the hearth family the day of its 17th birthday by travelling by a night train for New York. The first thing which it made has its arrival was to send a telegram to his/her adoptive parents to inform them that all was well, not to inform the police force its disappearance and that it was going to find a job in New York
