James J. Rorimer (1905 – 1966), was an American curator of a museum. It directed the Metropolitan Museum off Art of New York. Graduate of the Harvard university in 1927, James Rorimer was immediately engaged by the Met where it will pass the remainder of his career. He was initially assisting within the department of decorative Arts then quickly climbs the levels to become preserving medieval collections in 1934. He expensive took again the project of the museum of the Cloisters to Joseph Breck. At the time of its opening in 1938, Rorimer became its conservative and bought new parts in order to pack the collections, among which the Tapisserie with the Unicorn . It engaged in the infantry in 1943 then had to be useful in the section files, monuments and beautiful arts of the seventh army and dealt with works flights by the Nazis during the Second world war. After the war, Rorimer was named director of the Cloisters in 1949. It replaced Francis Henry Taylor in 1955 as new director of the Met. During its 11 years at this station, the museum acquired some of its more beautiful pieces, like the fabric of Rembrandt, Aristote Contemplating the Bust of Homer . During this period, the frequentation of the museum passed from two million to six million annual visitors. Rorimer mourrut in its sleep in 1966, of an heart attack.
