James Grieve is the name of an old variety of Pomme which owes its name with its creator, James Grieve, who obtained this variety by crossing a Pott' S Seedling with a Cox' S Orange Pippin with Edinburgh in Scotland towards 1890.
James Grieve was formerly cultivated in all the Europe but the variety does not support well the modern transport conditions because it marks rather easily. It thus is cultivated more and appreciated only by the amateurs for their personal consumption.
It is pollinated by white Transparente, McIntosh, Idared, Pomme bell, Cox Orange, Reine of the Rennets, Golden Delicious, Elstar or Gloster.
It is also very good pollinating for other varieties of apple tree.
The Semis of Pépin of “James Grieve” are considered to inherit the precocity of setting with fruit of this variety.
