James Grieve is the name of an old variety of Pomme which owes its name with its creator, James Grieve, who obtained this variety by crossing a Pott' S Seedling with a Cox' S Orange Pippin with Edinburgh in Scotland towards 1890.

James Grieve was formerly cultivated in all the Europe but the variety does not support well the modern transport conditions because it marks rather easily. It thus is cultivated more and appreciated only by the amateurs for their personal consumption.

Description

The James Grieve is a tasty, juicy apple. Initially acid, it softens with the maturation of the apple in September then the flesh softens dice mid-October. In early gathering, that gives very good cooked apples or to knife.

Culture

The apple tree “James Grieve” is a weak but easy tree of maintenance. Early and very fertile, it is not prone to the Alternance. It is resistant to many diseases but is however sensitive to the bitter Taches and the bacterial Feu, reason for which it is interdict of culture in France. He appreciates the rather wet grounds and it happens that these fruits fall in abundance in the event of strong heat.

It is pollinated by white Transparente, McIntosh, Idared, Pomme bell, Cox Orange, Reine of the Rennets, Golden Delicious, Elstar or Gloster.

It is also very good pollinating for other varieties of apple tree.

The Semis of Pépin of “James Grieve” are considered to inherit the precocity of setting with fruit of this variety.
