Career
James Dean begins her career of actor by making odd jobs as guard of carpark and while turning in an advertizing for the Pepsi Cola. It leaves the university to be able to devote itself entirely to its passion of actor, and follows courses of comedy to the Actors Studio of New York. It then makes appearances in various series of Télévision like: Kraft Television Theater , Studio One , Video Lux Theater , Danger , Robert Montgomery Present and General Electric Theater .He also plays Théâtre where he is a great success with Broadway with New York in the part of André Gide, Immoraliste , which propels it in the world of the Cinéma.
He appears in various films little known, but it is its role of Cal Trask in '' In the east of Eden '', where he accepted besides a nomination with the Oscars for the male best supporting role (first posthumous nomination of the history of the Oscars), which returns it celebrates and reveals all its dramatic genius. It then connects with the Fury of living , then Géant , its last film where it also accepted a nomination with the Oscars for the better actor.
In the east of Eden
The realizer Elia Kazan sought an actor to interpret the role of Cal Trask in his new film, '' In the east of Eden ''. Dean and another unknown actor at the time, Paul Newman, were the last two choices of Elia Kazan. Finally, it is Dean which obtained the role.
Elia Kazan said of him: “I chose Jimmy because it was Cal. There was no doubt, nobody could not play it better than him”.
The March 8th 1954, Dean leaves New York and goes to Los Angeles to begin the turning of film. Dean plays the part of one young man to the research of the love of his/her father, played by Raymond Massey.
The relation between Cal and its father is not without pointing out the relation between James Dean and his. Dean does not cease improvising in film. In one of the most outstanding scenes, Cal gives the money which it gained with his father and this one refuses this gift. Cal was to only leave but Dean brought its key and started to cry and tighten Raymond Massey before leaving. This shows well at which point the creativity of Dean did nothing but start. Dean was nominated with the Oscars in this role and became the first actor with being nominated on a purely posthumous basis.
Fury of Living
It continued its rapid rise by interpreting the main role in the Fury of Living , a film which upset certainly the teenagers of the time. The other stars of film are Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo. The realizer Nicholas Ray let the imagination of James Dean develop in order to recreate the character of Jim Stark. The scene worship reflects the unconcern of the youth of the time: the famous race of car enters the character of Jimmy and Buzz.
During film, James Dean was caught passion for the automobile races and bought her first Porsche 356 Speedster (Chassis number 82621) with whom it started to gain some races.
Giant
Géant left the year after death James Dean, in 1956, and saw Dean playing a secondary part at the sides of Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. It did not have the main role but the majority of criticisms of the time said that Dean was incontestably the star of film. The film, which is held over one 50 years period, tells the history of Texans for this period. It was the last film of James Dean, for whom it was also nominated as a better actor. Only two weeks after the end of the turning of film, James Dean died in an car accident, which constrained production to use another voice to finish the Post-synchronization film.
Its death
After having rolled almost 4 hours, James Dean was going to cross Cholame, a small town of California. At this moment, a young student, Donald Turnupseed, arrive of road 41 at the wheel of a Ford Sedan. James Dean, is to him on US Highway 466. The young student cuts the priority and James Dean tries to circumvent the car: it will not arrive there. It is the shock, the two cars are returned inside, but the helps arrive immediately: two police officers were pilot scene. The passenger of the car of James Dean, his mechanic Rolf Wutherich, is projected car but undergoes only some light wounds, the young student leaves itself there, him also, with only some hématomes. James Dean, as for him, dies on the blow. Its death was announced with 17:59 exactly the September 30th 1955 whereas it is 24 years old.As opposed to what everyone said, James Dean did not roll excessively quickly, hardly to 88 km/h, it is the student one which rolled too quickly. James Dean had just finished the turning of '' Giant '' ('' Géant ''). Irony of fate, a clause of its contract prohibited to him the automobile races or the dangerous drivings during all the duration of turning.
It is buried today in Park Cemetery with Fairmount.
The student who had cut the priority to James died, him, of a cancer in 1995, by fearing all his life to undergo the madness of fans of James Dean.
Porsche 550 Spyder
It is in 1955 that James Dean acquires one of the 90 Porsche 550 Spyder, that it calls " Little Bastard" (" small bâtard"). After its death, this car became celebrates in spite of it, because it did not only kill the star of the cinema, but also some other people in the years which followed. Many people believed that the vehicle of the actor was cursed. Georges Barris, which personalized the car of James, buys the wreck of the vehicle 2500 $ and fractures the leg some time later.
A little later it sells the engine and the transmission to the physicists Troy McHenry and William Eschrid. By making the race one against the other, one dies by striking a tree after having lost the control of its car, while the other is seriously wounded after his left the road.
Barris sells the tires of the car: they cause an car accident with the purchaser, and this in spite of the fact that they are in good state.
Two young people try to steal the car but one of them, by taking the wheel of Porsche, opens the arm because of a piece of shredded metal. Later, another man is wounded while trying to steal the operator's seat covered with blood. Lastly, Barris decides to hide the car, which is recovered by California Highway Patrol to expose it as example on the road accidents.
The first exposure knew a disaster: indeed, a fire is declared in the room and only the car in unscathed fate. The second, in a college, has another consequence: the car falls and breaks the leg of a student. On the way leading to Salinas, the truck which transports the vehicle has an accident and the driver is wounded, only because of Porsche. From two other occasions, the car “escaped” from the trucks without causing serious accidents, but by breaking the windshield of a vehicle.
Finally, in 1959, it was the last exposure of the car in eleven parts, because in 1960 it disappeared mysteriously with the truck in which it was. " never again was re-examined; Little Bastard".
Among her other vehicles, James Dean had also many motor bikes.
Heritage
James Dean was one of the 5 actors to have been nominated in the category of the best actor for its first role, and was then the only one to have been nominated twice after her death. Two films of 1955, Rebel Without because ( Fury of living ) and Blackboard Jungle ( Seed of violence ), the most are quoted to express the rebellion of the young teenagers of the Années 1950 and played a part with the Rock “roll, to become a phenomenon. From the exit of the Fury of living and the interpretation of James Dean, good number of teenagers of the whole world started to idealize James Dean and to at the time regard it as the perfect representation of the discomfort of youth. This extraordinary role has, undoubtedly, makes known the enormous talent of Dean, and for this day one has found good number of actors who can say that they were influenced by Dean. One of them is Elvis Presley, which affirmed even in one of its interviews that he would have hoped to have had a career similar to that of the young actor. Certain newspapers compared the young actor River Phoenix with James Dean because of her incredible talent but also because of its tragedy died in only 23 years.
Incontestably, the talent of James Dean preserves a durable influence on youth. Today still, of the teenagers recognize themselves in its characters of rebel. James Dean leaves an important, universal and timeless trace in the cinema world.
" The Legend of Jimmy" is a musical comedy of Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon inspired by the life of James Dean.
Sexuality
Various biographies of the actor affirm his homosexuality, others its bisexuality; but it is the second assumption which seems most plausible. Some even regard it as a gay icon. Indeed, in one of them, one learns that it lost its virginity with Pasteur James DeWeerd, and it is this same Pasteur who celebrated his burial. Various biographies of the actor say that it left every evening to New York and that, each evening, it had a different conquest, whether it is man or woman. However, he knew great love affairs with women: its very first was the dancer Liz Sheridan with whom it lived when it was with New York. Their relation will last a little more than one year. The latter will affirm later in her biography that James had a relation with the producer Rogers Brackett. It left then with Geraldine Page, his partner in Immoraliste , this relation lasted only 3 months because James Dean was to leave to make the turning of In the east of Eden ( East off Eden ).Its greater relation was with the Italian actress Pier Angeli. This relation was sufficiently strong so that James asked it in marriage, but the mother of the actress refused. This refusal had as a consequence separation between James and Pier; a few days afterwards, one announces engagement of Pier Angeli to an unknown crooner, Vic Damone. A legend tells that the day of the marriage, the November 24th 1954, the actor waited in front of the church on its motor bike, by hoping that its promised comes to join it.
Let us not forget either its greater relation, that with William Bast, her friend and lover, with whom there remained age of 19 to 24 years, with phases in love and friendly. William Bast speaks about it extremely well in her book " My Life with James Dean".
It had finally a relation with the actress Maila Nurmi.
