James Coburn was an American actor.
He was born on August 31st 1928 in Laurel, in Nebraska and died of an cardiac arrest on November 18th 2002 in Cedar the Sinai Hospital of Los Angeles, California.
He was unforgettable “a presence” of the screen, at the same time off-hand and charismatic.
It will remain forever in the memory of the film enthusiasts as an actor fêtiche of Sam Peckinpah with memorable roles as in Major Dundee , Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid (the role of its life) and Cross off Iron .
Its most popular role (which will solidify it in a kind of unconscious collective) will be that of the revolutionist dynamiter John Mallory in splendid the It was once the revolution of Sergio Leone in 1971.
It turns in the Seven Mercenaries in 1960 and took part in the Great Escape in 1963 with his large friend Steve McQueen.
Youth
It settles very young person in
California where his/her father is ruined by the stock exchange Crise of
1930 wanting to remake fortune.
Raise of the Junior College of Compton then of City College of
Los Angeles, it finds its vocation quickly.
November 11th
1959, it Marie with Beverly Kelly until in
1979. They had 2 children.
Its interpretation in the part “Country girl” is worth a reward to him and allows him to obtain a role in “Billy Budd” assembled â La Jolla Playhouse. James becomes a popular actor of second plan during a few years.
Career
Its virile sophistication, its cat-like step, its paces of dandy and
the ascetic hardness of its face (affublé of impressive teeth) agree as much to the world Viril of
John Sturges,
Sam Peckinpah,
Sergio Leone or
Walter Hill that with the comic universe of a
Blake Edwards.
It passes briskly from action film to the American comedy. Of the Great Escape from John Sturges with Charade of Stanley Donen. In 1965, it reaches the row of high-speed motorboat with its creation of a new spy of charm, a transitory rival of James Bond : Flint.
It turns in 1st film of Walter Hill: the Brawler in 1975 with Charles Bronson and incarnates again a figure of cow particularly hard servant boy dandy in superb the the wild Ride of Richard Brooks the same year.
With his friend Bruce Lee, James Coburn had written “the Iron Circle” adapted to the screen by Richard Moore in whom neither one nor the other appeared.
Decline of the Eighties
In
1978, at the request of a Peckinpah sick and depressive, it ensures the direction of the second team on
Convoy.
But in 1984, its career marks a brake with the disappearance of his/her friend and his realizer fetish: Sam Peckinpah.
He faces Kirk Douglas in a telefilm: the Duel Of the Heroes , the same year. The film of TV tells the confrontation of two old cow-boy in a west of shoddy goods.
End of a kind, one time and a certain category of actor.
He continues to walk his legendary nonchalance and his inimitable relaxation according to the expression of a critic in “œuvrettes of circumstance to enticing casting but stripped of interest”.
Perhaps too imposing for its time, the realizers do not find any more a big role to him…
With rock bottom, it must face painful crises of arthritis who weaken it considerably. He stated to be himself neat itself with pills containing Soufre. He moves away from the plates during a few years. he will keep a crippled hand of it.
the Oscar
Whereas one believed it lost for the cinema, James puts an end to a semi-retirement with the beginning of the year 1990 with secondary but always marked roles his presence raising the interest of westerns like
Maverick in
1994 with
Mel Gibson,
Jodie Foster or Young Guns 2 in
1991. Hardly buckled remake of
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid.
It still holds its own role in The Player in 1992. Its second career is completed in beauty with a telefilm of the cabled chain HBO distributed in the French rooms: The Second Civilian War 1997 formidable sardonic fable of Joe Dante.
By miracle, he is not forgotten by Hollywood and takes down for Affliction in 1998 the Oscar of the best supporting role.
Terrifying composition of an alcoholic patriarch, inspired, he says, of Sam Peckinpah:
he is splendid there…
Last years
James Coburn, in spite of the disease, will not cease playing and will lend even his voice at the time of documentary the
The Last Days in
2001 over the last days of
Marilyn Monroe and for the drawing of animation
Monstres and Co in
2002.
He holds a last role of hard to cook in 2002 in a Disney production: Dogs Of Snows.
He dies little of time after an cardiac arrest.
Strange turn of the destiny, Rod Steiger its double in mythical film It was once the revolution of Sergio Leone had just disappeared very little from front time.
