Jaligny-on-Besbre

Jaligny-on-Besbre is a common French, located in the department Allier and the area Auvergne.

Geography

History

The name of Jaligny comes from Latin Castrum Gallinici , and Jaliniacum (more tardily).

In spite of its modest dimensions, Jaligny carries the title of Ville since the medieval time.

In 1792, Marseigne , commune located at the west, on the other side of the Besbre, was attached to that of Jaligny. The parish Saint-Blaise was attached to the Saint-Hippolyte parish.

The November 20th 1967, Jaligny becomes Jaligny-on-Besbre.

Places and monuments

A castle Renaissance is drawn up at the entry of Jaligny. Its Postern date however of the 14th century.

Are to be also quoted the Saint-Hippolyte church (and 15th centuries), vestiges of fortifications (a tower in the borough) and the castle of Lonzat.

Personalities related to the commune

Rene Fallet, writer and scenario writer, lived the district of Marseigne .

It is in Jaligny that is held the action of the film " soup with the cabbages " of Jean Girault (1981), even if the film were not made there.

Annual events

The events are related to the local traditions, which are primarily rural and agricultural.

The agricultural Show, legatee in 1948, takes place the week end, three weeks before Easter.

“Capital of Turkey”, Jaligny organizes each year its “Fair with Turkeys”, two weeks before Christmas, Wednesday. A personality is invited there to receive a preceded turkey. Winston Churchill, the queen Elisabeth II, the pope Paul VI, the draftsman Piem or the Québécois singer Fabienne Thibeault (in December 2006) are with the number of those which received a turkey of honor.

The employers' festival, which attracted the many open ones in the past, took place one Sunday close to the August 13rd, festival of Saint-Hyppolyte.

The Literary prize Rene Fallet (of the name of the writer, to see above) and the Bourbonnais Price are decreed each year since 1988, at the time of the Literary Days of Bourbonnais, organized in Jaligny by Agir association in Jalignois country.
