Jah

In the Hebraic Bible, one finds 26 occurrence of the word hébreu' יָהּ = Yah' or Jah .

One finds also the term in composed form, in the word Alléluia, or halellujah : Hallel or Yah , “Return praise in Yah”.

It acts in the bible of a shortened form of YHWH (Yahweh, or Jehovah). It thus designates God.

Origin of the word Hebrew

The theory presented by Henri Meschonnic, in Gloires (translation of the Psalms) affirms that this name derives from an old divinity of the name of Yah (YH, יה).

It is also possible that it is simply an abbreviation of YHWH.

Use at Rastafariens

Under its Latin C-W communication Jah , the term became the name commonly used to indicate God in the faith Rastafari (the Rasta S will say even Jah Rastafari ), a black religion nationalist of Christian obedience originating in Jamaica.

Rastafaris regard Hailé Sélassié Ier of Ethiopia as the incarnation of Jah on Ground. Some of them even consider as its personification although this last never admitted its own divinity.

The term is not very present in the Hebraic Bible (26 occurrence when it is employed only, without counting the made up uses), and is thus used rather little in the Judaïsme, which privileges Elohim, Adonaï (lord), HaShem (the name) or YHWH. Being in the Tanakh , it however has a recognized religious value.

Under another Latin C-W communication, Yah , the term became the name commonly used to indicate off God in the faith of the African Hebrew Israelites Jerusalem , a black religion nationalist Black hebrew originating in the the United States, and of which many members live today in Israel.

The followers regard themselves as descendants of the Israélites of old the Tribu of Juda.
