Jaffna is a city located at the North of the Sri Lanka to 400 km of Colombo and close to India of the South It was the second city in importance of the country up to one recent period. Its population decreased however much because of agitation caused by the war.

Formerly important port, but now ensablé, it is used more only by fishermen.

The city is regarded as the cultural capital of the Tamoul S Srilankais. LTTE control the city.

Jaffna was the capital of a kingdom tamoul established by Arya Chakravarti, a Minister for the king Pandya Kulasekhara.
