Layers

One finds Néphrite in China, in Russia, in Zealand News and in Canada. Jadeite was also used in Guatemala by the Mayas; it undoubtedly came from the highlands of the country (Sierra of mow Minas). One also finds some in Kazakhstan, in Burma (imperial jade) and China.

Symbolic system

In the Eastern symbolic system, jade was a stone relating to the emperor, symbol of an absolute capacity. The emperor was to raise a jade sceptre (Jouyi) at the time of the great ceremonies. The five rows of princes received each one a shelf of jade of a particular type.

  • the first rank received an oblong shelf with two engraved columns.

  • the second rank received an oblong shelf where a man appeared upright, the right body.
  • the third rank received an oblong shelf where was represented a curved man.
  • the fourth rank received an annular shelf on which was reproduced of the millet.
  • the fifth rank received a engraved annular shelf of sheets of snap ring.

Each year, the princes went in audience in front of the emperor and returned their shelves which then were compared with the form-models preserved at the palate. If all were in conformity the shelves were restored to them. The simple fact that the emperor does not wish to return a shelf meant the dismissal of the prince. The envoys of the emperor and the ambassadors had, as for them, of the half shelves cut in the length and which were to correspond perfectly to the complementary part which had been entrusted to the correspondent. To have a jade, in China, is thus, to some extent, capacity to claim with an imperial dignity.

In addition one placed in the mouth of late cicada out of jade, symbol of the eternal life and resurrection.
In the East, jade is also compared to the seed of the dragon.

The Noces of jade symbolize the 26 years of Mariage in the French folklore.
