Jacques Viger

Jacques Viger (Montreal, May 7th 1787 - Montreal, December 12th 1858) is the first Maire of Montreal. It was also antique dealer and archeologist, like journalist, author, officer of militia, civil servant, landowner, collector, etc

In 1826, with Ludger Duvernay and Auguste-Norbert Morin, it founds the newspaper Minerve .

Montreal having obtained its charter in 1832, the election of the first municipal council is made in 1833. It is this council which appoints Jacques Viger first mayor of the city. It will remain with the town hall until 1836, date where the city is put in supervision by the government until 1840.

It east depicts on the stained glass in the station McGill of the Métro of Montreal at the sides of Peter McGill.
