Jacques Tourneur , sometimes anglicized in Jack Turner , born with Paris the November 12th 1904 and died with Bergerac the December 19th 1977, is a French realizer which made the essence of its career with Hollywood. It obtains American nationality in 1919. He is the inventor of the Effect-bus.

Biography

He is the son of Maurice Tourneur, illustrator and realizer himself. He follows his father to the United States in the years 1920, where this one gives up it after having snap the door on the turning of the mysterious Île .

Career

He begins in the cinema with beginning of the year 30, as assembler of films of his father (of which Cheerfulnesses of the squadron ), or other directors. He carries out four films in France starting from 1931, before leaving for Hollywood in 1934. He carries out initially only short films there, then directs second teams on more important films. He does not appear in this case with the credits, the second teams not being credited at the time.

One entrusts then the realization to him of feature-length films, primarily of the series B. It excels in the Science fiction film, but also carries out Western S, films of adventures and black films until the end of the Fifties. In its science fiction films, it is distinguished while exploiting above all the unvoiced comment and the suggestion to cause the anguish.

An good example of its “method” is the scene of the swimming pool, in the film Cat-like the , scene included such as it is in the remake carried out forty years later by Paul Schrader. Turner causes a strong tension while exploiting the lighting and the remote regions, the instability of the environment (the water of the swimming pool, reflections of water on the walls), the catch of sight in diving and low-angle shot, and the reverberation of the sound which wraps the spectator completely, which is a feat of ingenuity with a band its mono. He spent two days besides to record the sound of this scene in the swimming pool (for one 21 days total duration of turning).

He carries out some other masterpieces, like Vaudou , the Man Leopard , Rendez-vous with the fear or Pendez me high and short .

He works then for television, in particular the series Bonanza and the Fourth Dimension .

In 1966, it returns to France and settles in the Dordogne, close to Bergerac where it receives some of its knowledge of Hollywood, in particular Dana Andrews.
