Jacques Stuart says also Bothwellhaugh († 1585), was a captain of the guards and favorite of the king Jacques VI of Scotland.

He was in charge of the supervision of the young person James Hamilton, 3rd Count d' Arran, wire of James Hamilton. He usurped his titles during 5 years when Hamilton was declared insane.

He was made the instrument of Matthew Stewart de Lennox, Count de Lennox, favorite of the king, and showed Jacques Douglas, count de Morton, above regent of Scotland, complicity in the murder of Lord Darnley, husband of Marie Stuart, and made it deliver to the torturer (1581). He became lieutenant of the kingdom, and enjoys some time a capacity without terminals. But it was made so odious that the noble ones were armed to force the king to draw aside it (1585). It went to live in its retirement, and was killed shortly after by a relative of Morton.
