Biography

Professional player, Jacques Santini carried out almost all his career with the ACE Saint-Etienne of which it carried the colors between 1969 and 1981. Santini thus knew the great hours of the Verts with which it gained four championships of France, two Coupes of France and taken part in the finale of the Coupe of Europe of the Champions in 1976. There will remain the author of the famous blow of head on the " posts carrés" (makes the transverse bar of it) stage of Hampden Park in Glasgow. It finished its professional path with the Montpellier Paillade.

After having started a reconversion as trainer-player with the club amateur of the CA Lisieux in division 3 of 1983 with 1985, it involved then in the first division: the Toulouse FC, the Lille OSC, the ACE Saint-Etienne and the FC Sochaux which it joined in the course of season in December 1994.

After one season without club, it is named chief technical officer of the Olympique Lyonese starting from 1997, club of which he becomes the trainer of 2000 with 2002. It is with the Olympique Lyonese that it starts his prize list of trainer: a Cut of the League in 2001 and the championship of France in 2002. In June 2002, its contract of trainer is completed without he not asking the renewal of it, and he takes again his technical position of director of the Lyons club, having taken share with the designation of his successor on the bench, Paul Le Guen.

But hardly a few weeks later, after the failure of the Blue at the time of the Football world cup 2002 in Asia, it is called in August 2002 like selector of the team of France of football. He manages to carry the Coupe of the Confederations in 2003 and easily qualifies in an extremely weak eliminatory group (Cyprus, Malta, Israel and Slovenia) the Blue ones for the final stage of the Euro 2004 with the Portugal. Extremely of this assessment, it wishes to obtain a prolongation of its contract beyond the Euro while the federation wishes to await the results of the team of France in Portugal before renewing its confidence with its selector. Santini then takes its world speed by announcing a few days before the beginning of the Euro its signature in the English club of Tottenham Hotspur for the season 2004 - 2005. With the Euro, the Blue ones of Santini will hardly shine. After a first hard turn, they are made eliminate in quarterfinal by the Greece.

As announced, it then joined at once Tottenham. But the English adventure will be short. He resigns of his station after only five months and 13 matches with the head of the team following internal problems with the club related to the flow chart of the Spurs .

The June 8th 2005 it replaces Guy Roux at the post of trainer of AJ Auxerre. After one acceptable season, he announces his departure as of the May 17th 2006.

Jacques Santini is often described by the sports correspondents like a “mystery”. Indeed, more still than his predecessors Aime Jacquet and Roger Lemerre, Jacques Santini is restive with speaking to the journalists and manages to elude the questions. the Puppets of information caricatured this feature by making some a frank person but who speaks very slowly.
