Jacques Piccard (born the July 28th 1922 with Brussels) is a Océanographe Suisse.

Biography

  • 1922, birth with Brussels.
  • Studies of economy, history and physics with Geneva.
  • It helps his/her father Auguste Piccard to build the Bathyscaphe “Trieste”.
  • 1953, first record of in-depth diving: 3.150 meters, with broad of the Italy.
  • January 23rd 1960, record of diving (10 916 m) in the Pit of Mariannes, in company of Gift Walsh.
  • 1963, construction of the tourist submarine, the Mésoscaphe Auguste Piccard.
  • international Forwarding to study the Gulf Stream with board submarine Mésoscaphe Ben Franklin.
  • Foundation with Cully of the Foundation for L `study and the protection of the seas and the lakes .
  • Construction of the minisubmarine with scientific goal the " F-Forel ".
  • 1988 Prototype of the PX-44, a tourist submarine, designed to be manufactured in series. This one weighed 9 tons, had a ten meters length, could take along sixteen passengers and two team members.
  • Sea To orbit, is a project of the architect Jacques Rougerie, in collaboration with the oceanographer Jacques Piccard and the astronaut Christian Jean-Wolf. Sea Orbiter, robotized and livable will behave like an enormous drifting oceanographic buoy in the oceans. Buoy-laboratory which can accommodate 18 people.

The Diving world records

The marine of the USA asks him to explore, in the Pacifique, the Fosse of Mariannes, more exactly in the Challenger pit, with broad of the the Northern Marianna Islands.
  • At 8 a.m., on January 22nd, 1960, Jacques Piccard and the American lieutenant Don Walsh settles in the sphere.
  • At 8 a.m. 23, the diving starts.
  • At 11 a.m. 44, they are already with 8.800 meters. The darkness is total, limpid water.
  • At 1 p.m., Trieste rests on the bottom, one, then two Crevette S reds pass in front of the port-hole, then a flat Poisson, of unknown species, 30 cm length. The temperature is so low that they must, at the end of the diving, to be heated with Bouillotte S… They establish an unbeatable record of diving thus, since there does not exist other place on ground which is deeper than the Challenger pit.
  • At 6 p.m., they go up finally, but during this 10 hours diving, they had all the time to study principal water and its caractéristiques : Radioactivity, Temperature, etc
