Jacques Perbet

The 12 messidor Year II (June 30th, 1794), a decree is taken, condemning to heavy sorrows the owners of farms where would be discovered refractory priests.

Among the victims of this repression: the abbot Jacques PERBET assassinated by “his escort” on April 28th, 1794, at 62 years.

This priest originating in Recharinges, at the time parish of Araules, exerted the functions of chaplain with Querières at the beginning of the Revolution.

Decree on April 25th, close to the village of Veyrac in the parish of Yssingeaux. He was maltreated by his geôliers and transferred to Puy with about thirty prisoners coming from Saint-Didier, victim of atrocity on the way which had led them to make a halt with the Sluice. Two inns of the village being insufficient for the prisoners and their escort. The Perbet abbot was placed by the chiefs of the detachment. Attached to the foot of a bed one of its guards launched to him: “One makes well fast the fatty pigs the their death day before! ”

At this time known abbot PERBET that it would never reach alive Puy.

Several inhabitants of Saint-Hostien attended the procession of condemned. The Perbet abbot recognizing some of the faces among these curious, because he was at the same time chaplain of Queyrières and vicar of Saint-Hostien. Believed well to make by engaging the conversation, but parmis them, a man, undoubtedly wanting to prove his fidelity with the authorities, strikes it with a stick.

Regarded as a martyr by the population of Velay, one came by far in pilgrimage on his tomb.

The 21 messidor Year VI (June 30th, 1798) the departmental administration exasperated by the pilgrims coming unceasingly more to collect itself on the tomb of the abbot, decided to prevent their come while posting troops in the neighbouring hamlets with for order stopping whoever wished to go on the tomb of the priest.

The remainders of abbot PERBET are currently preserved in the church of Saint-Pierre-Eynac.
