Jacques Paul Migne

Jacques Paul Migne (Saint-Flour, October 25th 1800 - October 25th 1875) (known as the abbot Migne ) is a French priest who published largely diffused cheap editions works of theology, encyclopedia and works of the fathers of the Church in original language with translation.

Migne was one of the first ecclesiastics to include/understand the capacity of the press and the edition of mass. It entered in conflict with its bishop for his militancy ultra-catholic and with the pope Pie IX to have placed at the disposal of the greatest number of the texts usually accessible to a restricted public and more informed.

In 1836 it created the publisher of Small the Montrouge, currently in the 14th district of Paris. The most known collection of work of this publisher is the Scripturae sacrae course completus which gathered a broad repertory of comments on each book of the Bible and the Theologiae course , each one in 28 volumes, 1840-45; Collection of the crowned authors (100 volumes., 1846-48); Theological encyclopedia (171 volumes., 1844-46).

The three large collections which made its reputation were Patrologiae course completus , collection of Latin texts in 221 volumes. (1844-45); collection of Greek texts, initially published in Latin (85 volumes., 1856-57); with the Greek text and the Latin translation (165 volumes., 1857). Migne is continuously quoted like reference in the Latin and Greek dictionaries, in particular in the Greek-French dictionary of Anatole Bailly. Its Greek and Latin Patrologies found a relay of quality starting from half of the XXe century in the collection Christian Sources

It will be noted that its publisher was supplemented under the Second empire by workshops of painting for the decoration of the churches: three of most successful works of these workshops, painted in the style of Delacroix, are thus still in the chorus of the church Saint Jean-Baptiste of Audresselles (Pas-de-Calais).
