Jacques Martin Hotteterre
Jacques-Martin Hotteterre known as “ the Romain ”, born September 29th 1673 with Paris where he died the July 16th 1763, Compositeur and flutist French.
Worthy heir to a famous family of factors of instruments wind originating of the Seam (today the Seam-Boussey in the department of the Eure) Jacques-Martin Hotteterre was undoubtedly endowed the most with his dynasty, with his Martin father, famous factor of flutes which created certain parts used by Jean-Baptiste Lully.
It is thought that his nickname “the Romain” would have been given to him following a voyage in Italy, information still not checked at present. He enters as of 1705 to the Grande Stable , then becomes flute of the room of Roy . He owes his fame with his talents of flutist, instrument for which he wrote very many parts, supplementing a not very wide repertory at the time (primarily of the parts for flutes and various instruments of Marin Marais and Michel of the Bar.
Excel manufacturer, Compositeur and Musicien of great talent, it left with the posterity works such as the Suites of parts with two flutes (1712), Duo and rondo (1708), etc, but also of works in technical and teaching matter, such as art to be a prelude to on the flute (1719), Principes of the recorder or flute of Germany, of the flute and the oboe (1707) whose several editions exist, with translations in Flemish and English of the same time.
Hotteterre brought great innovations to the invoice of the Flute. It cuts it in three parts: the cylindrical head with the mouth; the body with conical borer which comprises the holes of play; the leg which comprises a hole stopped by a key for the D sharp.
Engaged as musician of the king in the Large Stable, at the time when the flute made its entry in the Orchestre S, it was accommodated like one of the best Masters for this instrument lately adopted. The notoriety of its talent and its pedagogy made it reach the rank of teacher in music, near the son of the duke of Orleans in particular.
He married in 1728 in Paris Elisabeth-Genevieve Charpentier, girl of a notary, whose fortune, added to the heritage of his/her Martin father, enabled him to be exempted of a manual work and to be devoted entirely to its works and its teaching. He founded the first French school of flute. Jacques Hotteterre died in 1763.
