Jacques Legrand (philatelist)
The doctor Jacques Amable Legrand was one of the first French collectors of stamps of the 19th century, but also one of the first organizers of the incipient Philatélie. He used the pseudonym of Doctor Magnus .
He took an active part in the review Timbrophile of Pierre Mahé and invented the Odontomètre intrument necessary to the détermintion of the Dentelure of the stamps.
He delivered a combat in addition (lost), to indicate the activity of the collectors of the name of “Timbrologie”, rather than under the name of “philately” launched by Georges Herpin and defended by Arthur Maury. This last estimated indeed that because of its etymology Greek (or alleged such, because “philotélie” had been more exact), this designation was the best capable being included in the whole world.
Jacques Legrand is one of the founders, on June 14th, 1875, of the French company of timbrology, of which he was the first secretary, while Arthur de Rothschild became the president about it. In spite of the reference to the “Timbrologie” in the name of this association, Maury was member, like the painter Gustave Caillebotte.
