Jacques Knight
Jacques Chevallier is a French politician, born the December 15th 1911 in Bordeaux, he is deceased the April 15th 1971 in Algiers-el-Biar (Algérie).
Biography
Deputy republican-independent (CNI) of 1946 to 1951 and 1952 to 1955, he is Secretary of State to the War from June 19th, 1954 to January 20th, 1955 then Minister for the National defense from January 20th to February 23rd, 1955 in the Gouvernement Pierre Mendès France. He takes the first military measurements after the beginning of the war of independence in November 1954.He was member of the Algerian Parliament in 1951-1952 like RPF, general adviser and mayor of Algiers of 1953 to 1958. He entrusts to the architect Fernand Pouillon the responsibility of the construction of HLM. He is regarded as liberal in the Algerian context.
He occupies himself in particular with the National Assembly of the North-African questions and recommends an evolutionary policy for Algeria. Its name is decried at the time of the events of May 1958. It receives Algerian nationality after independence.
